MATHIEU, STEPHAN KAPOTTE MUZIEK BY

KORM PLASTICS

MCD

€8.50

original recordings from a kapotte muziek concert from august 1996, im eimer, berlin, germany. reworked by stephan mathieu at pixelland, schafbrücke and pullover, falkensee between february and october 2002. "i spent eight months processing raw material, resulting in the usual several gigabytes. when it was about time for me to finish the piece i returned to my files to edit them down in protools (mac os9). i re-listened to everything, made some adjustments, and then rebooted in osx to work in soundhack. after a little while my machine crashed, hard -- so hard that all i could do to restart it was to take out the batteries. when i finally rebooted in osx it did nothing else but play this music for 30 minutes, a medley of my kapotte muziek material, finished by the computer itself. kapotte muziek, ironically enough, translates as "damaged music." the live concert i remixed took place 1996 in a berlin club called "im eimer" - that's "in the bucket," a funny way of saying "out of order/damaged".

MATHIEU, STEPHAN ON TAPE

HÄPNA

CD

€13.90

""on tape" is a pivotal work for mathieu as this is the first time we hear him leaving his source material unprocessed by digital means. stephan started building this piece from recordings provided to him by swedish trio tape and saxophonist magnus granberg. adding his own subtle drumming, fieldrecordings and a focus on reworking the sound material exclusively with classic editing techniques this is a beautiful album that weaves elements from the electronic and acoustic worlds to a seamless whole. a very clear and uncomplicated atmosphere around this piece distinguishes it from a lot of electronic music." MATHIEU, STEPHAN THE KEY TO THE KINGDOM

DEKORDER

10"

€8.90

""the key to the kingdom" is stephan mathieu's tribute to the great gospel preacher washington phillips and the world of raw, early gospel on 78rpm platters. the 2-part suite, presented in the classic 10" vinyl format that comes in an authentic, individually stamped and numbered 78rpm archive sleeve, has been performed on a historic phonoharp no.2 zither from the 1890s utilizing five e-bows and entropic and convolution processes. "the key to the kingdom" is a spin-off of mathieu's "virginals" project, a solo recital of contemporary classics performed on historic instruments. stephan is a collector of 78rpm records from the 1910s and 20s, the era of acoustic and early electronic audio recording. his most recent album "radioland" made it into "best of 2008" lists in the wire, dusted, boomkat, milkfactory and many others." MATHIEU, STEPHAN THE SAD MAC

HEADZ

CD

€16.90

"'the sad mac' signals a subtle shift in supplemented with recordings of remarkable gentleness, careful edits and even a re-recording onto wax cylinder of 'tinfoil star (recording angles)' utilising a 1909 edison 'fireside' phonograph. the latter paradoxically encompasses all the 'requirements' of a contemporary piece of 'laptop music' with noise, crackle, aspects of recordings, glitch and dub. the result is a classic album featuring eight substantial pieces with introduction, interludes, coda and outro. warm swells of sound are gathered throughout - gently maintained, they drift as if floating on lazy currents of air before dying periodically, softly and slowly. a pump organ plays a melancholy motor's endless drone underpinning vocal fragments in shrouded italian. gusts of melody drenched in sunlight sparkle as they smoulder like the warm embers of a late night." MATHIEU & SCHAEFER, STEPHAN & JANEK HIDDEN NAME

CRONICA

CD

€15.90

"their first joint performance took place at the musica genera festival in szczecin, poland in spring 2005 which led to them wanting to produce a project together. a little later that year, midsummer had arrived. they spent a week in the beautifully calm, pastoral setting of manor farm house, the home of a classical composer in a small village in the south of england. stephan and janek made recordings using the large collection of classical and exotic instruments, a box of records found in the attic, and made location recordings in and around the house. finally, they took this material to the york music research center, a building specifically constructed for the presentation of loudspeaker music. it is considered one of the best electronic music auditoriums in the uk. they spent a week working there during the winter of 2005, composing and editing their favourite moments which then became the album hidden name." MATHIEU & TAYLOR DEUPREE, STEPHAN TRANSCRIPTIONS

SPEKK

CD

€15.90

"delving deeply into the history of the earliest recording methods through mechanical phonographs, stephan mathieu created a method using wax-cylinders, the predecessor of records, as well as 78s, which have a larger frequency range, to create his music through playback of these pieces of musical history. (...) from this result, taylor deupree worked with the recordings, adding acoustic instruments and vintage synthesizer. (...) through nearly 48 minutes of music, self-described as warm and enveloping, these sounds represent the pivotal movements of the unique, the saturated, and the exploratory, all colliding in what may be sometimes a wave of revolving fuzz, swirling melodies of the supernatural and the human, the delicate echoes of single revolutions, and gentle plucks of the guitar. it is both a conversation, and a translation of both sides. transcription, after all, means notating the unnotated." MATHIEU / MENS / SCHAEFER / TIMEBLIND, STEPHAN / RADBOUD / JANEK QUALITY HOTEL

MUTEK

CD

€14.90

this recording is the second in a series produced during mutek. it symbolizes our desire to foster meetings and collaborations amongst artists during their stay in montreal for the festival. during the 2002 edition of mutek, four artists invited by the festival decided to repeat the experience of turning a hotel room into a sound laboratory. the pieces on this record were created on a sunny june morning, and they exhibit an acute sense of improvisation and a fine degree of complicity amongst the participants. the resulting cd contains seven pieces of dense, sometimes harsh, sometime relaxing, electronic experiments. an intriguing journey into the mind of their authors. never disappointing. thanks to the musicians, stephan mathieu (ger), radboud mens (nl), janek schaefer (uk) and timeblind (usa), who, gathered at the quality hotel, were able to transpose this intimate moment and fertile exchange into unique and stimulating compositions. RUHLMANN, MATHIEU + CELER MESOSCAPHE

SPEKK

CD

€15.90

"the album 'mesoscaphe' is a sound work dedicated to the 1969 voyage of the ben franklin, the naturally-propelled submarine created to explore the currents of the gulf stream, and the nature of the sea. half of the sound is composed of original pieces of music, meant to symbolize a deepening human element culled from memory, from strings, pianos, and electronics. the other half of the sound is composed of natural field recordings, of the ben franklin itself, as well as the surrounding oceans and habitats, with the intention of providing realism through sound, just as if it were an actual document from the voyage, of the surrounding ocean. the artists exchanged their own original sounds with each other, allowing each artist to experiment and remix outside of their own sound sources, with the potential to apply our own sound methods to each others' sound sources, and develop the concept even further. titles were made to coordinate with the movement of the voyage, creating their own story, in relation to the progressing sounds. the final result is a documented literary and audio interpretation of the voyage, from the perspective of 3 sound and visual artists, of the experiences and surroundings of the crew of the ben franklin, traveling for 30 days by the gentle glide of the gulf stream. we hope to bring attention to an important event in history, overshadowed by the moon landings, and for people to know the story of the revolutionary submarine that explored the nature of the ocean, challenged scientific development, and ended up in a salvage yard."
