AKIYAMA / AMBARCHI / LICHT, TETUZI / OREN / ALAN WILLOW WEEP AND MOAN FOR ME

ANTIOPIC

3"CD

€9.90

"there are plenty of albums which would greatly benefit from being edited to fit on a 3" cd, but not many 3" cds which would improve for being expanded to album length. a happy exception to the rule is this intercontinental guitar trio's teasingly short debut, a 19 minute improvisation recorded live in (of all places) wellington, new zealand in 2004. a strikingly simpatico grouping, they patiently weave melodic twangs, wavering drones and looming hums into a reverb haze, offering a tantalisingly brief glimpse of an enticing modern post-mazzacane free blues demotic. surely an album is not too much to hope for?" ATELEIA SWIMMING AGAINST THE MOMENTS

ANTIOPIC

CD

€14.90

"structurally founded on conscious allusions to "pop", "ambient", "electronica", but imbued with a high degree of critical distance, ateleia music destabilizes classic notions of form and process in pursuit of a unique idea of song. subtle melodies emerge snakelike from deep within floods of shimmering multicolored static; densely layered strata of interference rupture into moments of tonal clarity, only to be subsumed into the next span of shifting sound. incorporating source material from a host of collaborators, skewed and reconfigured into a framework of constantly changing and decisive movement, the debut album from ateleia (james elliott) reveals a developed sense of composition and pacing across a range of approaches and textures. all eight of these tracks focus on elements of structure-and the decay of structure-with both the formed and the formless vying for space. the resulting sound is dense, angular and hypnotic, like watching red thread slowly twitch in the pulse of the tide." BURR / CURTIS, ANTHONY / CHARLES ALVIN LUCIER

SIGMA / ANTIOPIC

2CD

€20.90

"the work of alvin lucier needs little introduction. he is certainly one of the most innovative composers of his time, a pioneer and central figure in the world of experimental and electronic composition and performance. his early work, alone and in conjunction with robert ashley, david berhman, gordon mumma and others in the sonic arts union-which lucier helped found in 1966-is musically rich while simultaneously exploring the many physical and psychic effects of sound. pieces such as "i am sitting in a room" (1970) and "music on a long thin wire" (1977) are unequivocal minimalist classics. recent activity includes sound installation work and compositions for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by concentrating on the combination of close tuning and pure tones, sound is subtly sculpted and shifted to create mesmerizing patterns and sonic shapes. alvin lucier finds two extremely sympathetic interpreters of this approach in charles curtis (cello) and anthony burr (clarinet). this collection of compositions spread over two cds, including a new piece, titled "charles curtis" and written by lucier for this project, elicits an intense physical reaction - a testament to lucier's poetic and scientific focus, as well as the deftness of technique with which curtis and burr execute these rigorously transcendent compositions. packaged in a deluxe matte varnished fold-out digipak including a 20 page booklet of illustrations and writings by alvin lucier, hermann helmholtz and others." (label info) cd i: "in memoriam john higgins" (1987) for clarinet in a and slow sweep, pure wave oscillator, "on the carpet of leaves illuminated by the moon" (2000) for cello and pure wave oscillator, "still and moving lines of silence in families of hyperbolas part iii number 11" (1984) for cello and pure wave oscillator, "still and moving lines of silence in families of hyperbolas part i number 1" (1984) for clarinet and pure wave oscillator. cd ii: "charles curtis" (2002) for cello and slow sweep, pure wave oscillators, "in memoriam stuart marshall" (1993) for bass clarinet and pure wave oscillator, "music for cello with one or more amplified vases" (1993).

DANIELL, DAVID LOS JACINTOS

ANTIOPIC

CD-R

€9.90

"los jacintos was recorded in spain during daniell's february 2008 tour. organ-like tones ebb and swell to start the set, carving out a pulsing minimal foundation. less-processed electric guitar sounds begin to bubble up, giving way to beautifully psychedelic playing around the ten minute mark. here daniell sounds like manuel göttsching playing with ash ra temple, albeit in a more loose and blues-inflected style. it's a section of pure space-rock lyricism, suddenly spiraling back down into another trance inducing drone passage. the rest of the set continues to alternate wonderfully between these two poles, the whole time blissfully reaching upward for the sky." DANIELL, DAVID SEM

ANTIOPIC

CD

€14.90

"digital composition from the guitarist for new york trio san agustin (previous releases available through road cone and family vineyard). the understated improvisational nature of that group's work filters through in the deceptively random-generated feel of these carefully treated field recordings from the southern united states and new mexico. everyday occurrences are recreated and recast in a shimmering, scraping fogbank of sound that approximates something like the oblique process of memory. operating alongside the loose boundaries of composers such as brandon labelle and bernhard günter, david daniell brings a richness and depth of field to this compositional style from his other playing situations and so surpassing the genre to find something personal and unique." DANIELL, DAVID THE HIDEOUT

ANTIOPIC

CD-R

€9.90

"the hideout was recorded in march 2008 in daniell's adopted home city of chicago. a masterfully-built drone engulfs the first portion of the performance. the amount of detail here is staggering; beat patterns emerge within the drone, playing the performance space; spidery lines of guitar fade in and out and ghosts of melodies come and go. the density then subsides to let a rollicking finger-picked acoustic guitar piece emerge. recalling his chicago forbears gastr del sol as well as fahey's delta blues mutations, daniell plays both a precise and rugged version of his soon to be released piece "iv" (from the lp i-iv-v-i, due november 4th on the label table of the elements). at the end of the set, we've seen him drive that space train from the midwest down to the south, timen total suspension for the entire long, strange trip." GIFFONI / RANALDO / O'ROURKE, CARLOS / LEE / JIM NORTH SIX

ANTIOPIC

3"CD

€9.90

"a seething, screaming set of power electronics and guitar with hardly a moment's pause for air, this recording finds the trio of carlos giffoni (computer, synth, guitar), lee ranaldo (guitar, firebell) and jim o'rourke (synth) in devastating form. this is classic free bombast, alternately sounding like a "rock band" interpretation of merzbow's rainbow electronics or a punk update of a musica elettronica viva session. the instantly identifiable ranaldo/sonic youth guitar sound is joined by blurting digital scree and analog filter abuse, melding to create a heavy tidal rush of ecstatic cosmic noise. the bliss of the set is confirmed by the brooklyn audience's joyful reaction at the close. a seething, screaming set of power electronics and guitar with hardly a moment's pause for air, this recording finds the trio of carlos giffoni (computer, synth, guitar), lee ranaldo (guitar, firebell) and jim o'rourke (synth) in devastating form. this is classic free bombast, alternately sounding like a "rock band" interpretation of merzbow's rainbow electronics or a punk update of a musica elettronica viva session. the instantly identifiable ranaldo/sonic youth guitar sound is joined by blurting digital scree and analog filter abuse, melding to create a heavy tidal rush of ecstatic cosmic noise. the bliss of the set is confirmed by the brooklyn audience's joyful reaction at the close. recorded 31 august 2003 at north six, brooklyn ny, usa."

HINTERDING, JOYCE SPECTRAL

SIGMA / ANTIOPIC

CD

€14.90

"co-release with sigma editions. "a stunning work from australian intermedia artist joyce hinterding, spectral is based on celestial field recordings of magnetic fields and weather satellites made with a custom-built antennae. these phenomena were recorded in the isolated wilderness of bruny island, tasmania, and later appeared as the sound element in 'the levitation grounds', an audio/video installation with artist david haines. the result is a complex universe of mysterious interference, ghostly transmissions from unfathomable places, disembodied static, and failed communication. what is manipulated sound and what is straight sound remains unknown -- this is musique concrčte of the spheres."

SAKADA NEVER GIVE UP ON THE MARGINS OF LOGIC

ANTIOPIC

3"CD

€9.90

feat. mattin, eddie prévost, mark wastell, margarida garcia, rhodri davies, recorded 3 may 2003 at conway hall, london, uk. "for london's freedom of the city festival mattin's sakada materializes in a big band incarnation. unexpectedly, the larger the group, the smaller the sound. in contrast to sakada's dense previous recordings as the trio of mattin, prévost and rosy parlane, here the expanded sakada navigate a more restrained and open territory. droning passages rise and ebb in blocks, the sound folding over on itself, while minute textures dance on the edges. the emphasis on bowed sounds (prévost's cymbals, davies' harp, garcia's bass, wastell's objects and mattin's computer casing (!!!)) brings to mind the slow churning of a morton feldman composition, yet mutated further into the realm of the unexpected and abstract. this recording finds a group as attuned to the space in between as they are to each other. an intense document of precisely restrained improvisation."

ULTRA-RED AMNISTIA

ANTIOPIC

CD

€10.90

"los angeles collective ultra-red (previous releases available from comatonse, mille plateaux, fat cat, and beta bodega) come forward with an intense, playful and urgent commentary on the rights of undocumented immigrant workers. using the may day 2000 rally which took place on wall street in new york city as the sound source from which the group craft this suite of compositions, this 20 minute ep energetically brings the immediacy of the workers' situation to the fore. ranging in style from finely detailed minimal house to precise and focused soundscaping, these recordings mark a stylistic departure for the collective while merging to create a seamless listening experience complete with repeating motifs, both verbal and musical, throughout the release. the use of field recordings of the rally (vocal house?) to create the sense of protest through atmosphere and rhythmic urgency is more effective and complex than to be found in ultra-red's previous works." WINDHAM, NEED THOMAS EMPLOYMENT PATTERNS

ANTIOPIC

CD

€14.90

"the debut solo release by need windham, founder of concrete agit-prop duo presocratics (ex-table of the elements). a subtle new tape work constructed solely from the critically hated and rejected parts of presocratics compositions, employment patterns places itself far from the reserved monochrome of its contemporaries, distinguished, with a sly nod to morton feldman, through terse probing of tonal degree and compositional identity. need windham's fluid pop sensibility glares through the work's structure; indeed, the piece positively emotes -- frustration, joy, shame -- a true political and personal agenda emerges in abstract." WORKMAN, DION CHING

ANTIOPIC

CD

€10.90

"dion workman (of sigma editions) produces a confounding piece -- terrifyingly intrusive yet completely subtle, deep with texture and layer although monochromatic in character. ching is a complex work of grey shadows and glaring light, an exemplar of aggressive digital minimalism. its harsh textures coexist with the open-ended pulsation of extended tones and overtones, playing with the listener's tolerance. what sets ching apart from simple noise is workman's attention to minute detail, as well as the piece's mesmerizing structure. this short (20 minutes 37 seconds) and exhilarating work builds with calculated motion, suddenly bursting into silence, only to reconfigure itself, similar but different, in a quiet dance of amassing sonic shards."
