about the aerial project: "when i was very young, people got most of their entertainment from radio. they called it "playing the radio," as if it were a musical instrument. that's what i've tried to do in this piece. about this time, a few people encouraged me to look into using a computer for this work. i'd never used one, but i saw it would allow me to keep my mixes digital - no more transfer losses. so, at the end of 2001, i got a computer and an editing program for it, and spent what seemed a long time learning it. i began selecting mixes and loading them into the computer in late march, 2002. out of the 580, i selected 90 "best" mixes - eventually reduced to 59, the ones on the cds. finally, in assembling the cds, i followed david myers' suggestion to allow each piece to flow into the next - making a continuous journey to the end." "'for bunita marcus' (1985) is the third of the four large works for piano that morton feldman wrote during his last ten years. during his late period feldman was fascinated by what he referred to as crippled symmetry, a compositional strategy he derived from handmade oriental rugs. a pattern will be established and repeated an arbitrary number of times with each repetition having some tiny alteration, usually rhythmic. patterns come and go and return according to feldman's inner logic. there is also usually a pattern that functions more or less like a refrain at significant junctures. with rare exceptions the music is intended to be played as softly as is humanly possible. 'for bunita marcus' is feldman at his most austere. building from a pattern of repeated c-sharps in each hand, the music consists almost entirely of tiny melodic cells of two and three notes. chords are startling and the refrain, a five note scale played as an arpeggio, takes on a significance completely out of scale to the means employed." yoshihiro hanno a.k.a multiphonic ensemble begun to perform late 80's, took poetry reading and other role with his avant-garde jazz unit. its sound had a flavour of hip hop elements and method. his 1st album portrait of a poet under his real name yoshihiro hanno has universalistic beauty and received the many compliments from artist like ryuichi sakamoto and jim o'rourke. he composed the music for the movie flowers of shanghai, directed by hou hsiao-hsien, which was nominated to cannes film competition, this was hanno's first movie soundtrack. 1999, he released a 2nd album for sub rosa cirque as 'multiphonic ensemble'. hanno wrote the theme music for the movie called platform directed by chinese director jia jia zhangke who is most respected chinese director in the new generation. hanno's album april music on canvas#1 & canvas#2 (remixes) are now available as one release on sub rosa, including 'canvas#1' in its entirety and a selections of the remixes [oval, christophe charles, hidenobu ito] appearing on the 'canvas #2'. these tracks were only available in japan (on hanno's label cirque) so far from 'classical' music to intense destructuration, a new form of avant-garde. "'switch on war' a dream state synthesis of nights watching live tv coverage of the 1st gulf war, the reduction of colours to an electron midnight blue, the long periods of nothing really happening, the contrasting landscapes, (the desert, the city at night, the newsroom), the sudden hurtling through space, through a doorway, a camera on the nose of a missile, the bearing of silent witness slowly turning into complicity and mute acquiescence. at the back of the mind the thought that all this would soon be reduced to snapshot memories, archive, newsreel, history. originally devised as a performance for the club integral, in south london, at the height of the military activity, 'switch on war' was a harsh and brutal response to the media coverage of the conflict informed by a grotesque and disconcerting anti-music aesthetic heavily influenced by the disorientating, overloaded sound world of space invaders arcades. the cd version was recorded binaurally some weeks later, live in a disused morgue, as the war came to its stalemate close. by this time the anger had a bleak streak of sadness, a distorted expressionist requiem. this cd had the life expectancy of a magazine article or some such, no more than a year and it would be archive, a mere souvenir." "the garinagu are the afro-amerindian people with the most transnational presence in central america. with a particular ethnogenesis, produced by the encounter of caribs and arawaks in the lesser antilles, they remained throughout the conquest period, due to the race mixing with black slaves. they interpret their traditional sounds in this album: lullabies, festive chants, processional marches, and songs of religion and labor. livingston is a small region located on the caribbean coast at the river mouth of rio dulce, guatemala - only accessible only by boat or airplane, their isolation allows the conservation of many cultural elements, such as music and dance. the musical expression is based on the group of two, three, and even four drums "garaon" (primera -the high pitched- and segunda -the lowest-) and sonajas "sisiras" that interpret rhythms accompanied by a solo singer and a choir that repeats a verse." "mergence, below the demarcation and mix white conclude the world as will project, started ten years ago, the result of a collaboration between zbigniew karkowski and tetsuo furudate. the first piece arises from an infrabass ocean to crudely develop through a series of distant explosions, percussive energy, and short open cuts. as a whole, the structure is reminiscent of a slow crawling process. tremors follow (with karkowski, something always ends up shaking). for me, the second piece is both the imprint and the development of the first one. furudate's contribution to this joint venture is also easier to grasp. a menace passes by, and we are glad to remain hidden in our hole, letting the beast move along in short bursts (it must be rusty, metallic, torn, scorched). commissioned and performed by the berlin-based ensemble zeitkratzer, the third piece provides a cathartic and tragic conclusion, achieving what could be called a sketch of chaos."
