V.A. - TRAX - NOTTEROSSA / REDNIGHT (2CD)

"Much more than a simple record label, the TRAX experience coordinated from 1981 to 1987 by Vittore Baroni and Piermario Ciani represented a very original contribution to the "networking culture" that, making its first steps with Fluxus, Mail Art and other avantgarde circuits of the Sixties and Seventies, largely anticipated the advent of Internet and its interactive modalities. The reprint series starts with the "R" of Rednight, originally an audio-cassette with b&w booklet and a multimedia exhibition drawing inspiration from the novel Cities of the Red Night by William S. Burroughs, a pivotal figure in the counter-culture of the 20th century. The original audio cut-up, created in 1982 by TRAX Units 02 (Vittore Baroni) and 08 (Daniele Ciullini) with materials of 34 authors from 7 countries, has been remastered from the original master tape by Gianluca Becuzzi, who also used excerpts from the original audio-cassettes in his own stylized and stratified electroacoustic reinterpretation of the project. The suites Notterossa (1982, cd 1) and Rednight (2006, cd 2) are therefore two uncommon "modular compositions" that may be considered at the same time individual and collective works, created a quarter of a century apart one from the other. Visual works and textual cut-ups by 85 authors from 12 countries are also included in the cd 2, as a slide-show of almost two hundreds colour images. The new graphic lay-out for the special packaging, that updates to the third millennium the neat and iconic imprint given to the TRAX productions by the late Piermario Ciani, has been conceived by Laura Fiaschi + Gabriele Pardi / www.gumdesign.it. This reprint is a unique opportunity to rediscover the amazing variety and vitality of the "tape network" of the Eighties, a phenomenon with ramifications in the early new wave and industrial scenes. It also bears testimony to the foreseeing interactivity, independent and wholly outside the norms, of the innovative TRAX project." (label info)
