HOOKER, WILLIAM - HARD TIME (CD)

"Squealer Music is proud to be associated with improvisational drummer extraordinaire William Hooker. Recorded live at CBGB's in New York City on August 16, 1994 and December 1, 1995, Hard Time is an intense document of Hooker's powerful ensemble of the time, which included Jesse Henry, Doug Walker, Richard Keene, and Donald Miller, a member of Borbetomagus and Lhasa Cement Plant. From the opening strains of "Computer Glasses", Hooker and the band set off on a journey that will leave the listener gasping for breath. The enormity of the sound is stunning; Hooker sounds like a man possessed, and his occasional agonized shouts only amplify the fact that this is an artist pushing himself to his limits. The band picks up on the lead, and their melodic maelstrom is the lid blowing off the pressure cooker. Steam heat, indeed. William Hooker plays freely improvised music that is unlimited in its scope. He is a tireless performer who is willing to venture into a variety of experimental situations to give expression to his abstractions." (label info)
