SOUZA, CARMEN - PORT'INGLES (LP)

"Port'Inglês" (English Port) brings together musical narratives about the unique culture of the Cape Verde Islands and their inhabitants. Carmen Souza takes on these untold stories about Cape Verde's British past and the long struggle for decolonization in her very own style. With jazz as a language and expression of freedom for all cultures, the singer moves to traditional rhythms such as funana, contradança, morna, and mazurka. Together with her musical partner Theo Pascal, Carmen Souza has been honing a distinctive sound for more than two decades. Strongly influenced by jazz, she has developed a Creole musical language with a distinct Lusophone/Cape Verdean DNA.
