HARMONIOUS THELONIOUS - GRUMPY PIECES (LP)

With Grumpy Pieces, Düsseldorf-based musician Harmonious Thelonious (Stefan Schwander) returns with an album that condenses the core elements of his sound while intentionally pulling them apart. Pan-African and Middle Eastern rhythmic concepts, repetitive minimal structures and stripped-down electronics remain central, yet everything feels rougher, more brittle and noticeably less stable than before. Across eight tracks, melodies grind against rugged low-end currents, dry snares slice sharply through the mix, and the groove moves with a tense, restless energy. Grumpy Pieces mirrors a present shaped by political and social unease - not through explicit commentary, but through musical friction itself. The A-side opens with a more direct and propulsive character, before the B-side gradually embraces disintegration as an organizing principle, reaching its conclusion in the aptly titled "Dissolving." Produced once again in Schwander"s Düsseldorf home studio, the album emerged through an intuitive, screen-free workflow: ideas played, recorded, abandoned, reshaped. This working method connects directly to his live performance practice, where repetition becomes a trance-state rather than a narrative form. Grumpy Pieces is not a departure but a sharpening - a concentrated, physical and uneasy continuation of the unmistakable Harmonious Thelonious sound. Dance music with teeth.
