"Joana Sá's "Through this Looking Glass" is contemporary music for piano and still different. It is fashionable where contemporary classical music is at loss and it is versatile where pop music tends towards redundancy. It tells a story about the dream of childhood, about the search of freedom and it freely offers points of reference to Lewis Carrol's Alice. A sophisticated preparation of the piano, the amplification and electronically modified reproduction of piano sounds and curious playing techniques meet a surreal setting with different kinds of wind up toys, a toy piano and an abundant mobile with phantastic creatures in black metal silhouettes (by New York based artist Rita Sá). The portuguese director Daniel Neves turned it into a black and white movie which picks up the storyline and gives special insights into Joana's piano playing and into the piano itself. The recently released threepart foldable digipack on blinker offers the piece as movie on DVD (region free), as well as on Audio-CD and comes with a 16-page booklet." (label info)
