"The title comes from Giuseppe Peano's logic, where it names a variable bound by a quantifier - one whose meaning does not depend on the symbol chosen (e.g. the x in ?x P(x)). Later, Lacan purloined the term in his seminars to describe how a signifier can mark an empty place, a structural position rather than a substance.
